*Zojirushi’s 480 mL type (Model SM-S) keeps hot water of 95°C±1°C at 71°C or higher even after 6 hours in a room temperature environment of 20°C±2°C. It also has a cold retention effect to keep cold water of 4°C±1°C at 8°C or lower after 6 hours.

Secret 01: There is a Vacuum Layer
Heat always moves from an area with a higher temperature to one with a lower temperature through materials such as metal, wood, glass, and water (thermal conduction).
Air is also a pathway for heat transfer.
Therefore, heat transfer to the outside can be blocked if the space between the inner bottle and outer bottle of a vacuum bottle is made airless (vacuum).

Secret 02: The Inside of the Bottle is a Mirror
However, there is a type of heat transfer that cannot be prevented by a vacuum alone.
It feels warm when you put your hand over the stove not only because the stove warms the air in the room, but also because the heat from the stove directly hits your hand.
In other words, heat is also transferred by radiation like rays of light (radiant heat).
To prevent this, we create a finish like a mirror by placing a copper or aluminum foil between the inner bottle and outer bottle of the vacuum bottle, so that any heat released outward is reflected back inside by this mirror.
This mechanism keeps the heat trapped inside.
